You can do it, but most firms discourage unsolicited material, much less unscheduled walk-ins. But every once in a while you get lucky, and someone will take some time to listen to your pitch. If you don't get discouraged easily, then go for it. Then again, if you get discouraged easily, this biz ain't for you. ;) It's all about persistence.

And yes, there are some decent songwriter tip sheets. New On The Charts is the best I know of, but there's a catch-22; you need to have already had a charted song within the past five years to qualify as a subscriber. It's certainly not "entry-level". Your best bet is probably a service like TAXI (http://www.taxi.com).
