Subject: encoders
After getting several emails regarding encoders that will work with PAN's new webcasting services, I thought I'd post a few words on the subject. If you're using a PC, it's a snap, as the Microsoft encoder is free, and it generates ASF format streams, which is what our server needs. The URL to download the encoder is http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/wm7/encoder.asp.
If you're using a Mac, it gets more complicated. Apparently Quicktime doesn't provide an option for ASF output. But there are some software packages that will do the conversion. Terran's Cleaner 5 will do the deed, but I'm not sure if it will handle a live feed. Sorenson's Broadcaster will, and it's less expensive ($199). http://www.sorenson.com/products/broadcaster.asp.
There's another Mac package called Live Wire, which can be downloaded for a free trial at http://www.channelstorm.com/
If any Mac users try out these packages, please let us know how they work.
Cheers!
